Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. To honor his memory as a prolific civil rights activist, we celebrate his birthday, life, and legacy every year on the third Monday in January. This year the federal holiday is on January 17, and there are some virtual events you can participate in to help you celebrate!

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, also known as The King Center, was started in 1968 by the late doctor’s wife, Coretta Scott King. Each year, the center in Atlanta organizes events to honor the national holiday. Last year’s theme was “The Urgency of Creating the Beloved Community!” and this year’s is “It Starts With Me: Shifting Priorities to Create a Beloved Community.” From January 6 through January 17, there will be press conferences, book readings, community awards, and more to watch online.

Make sure to check out The King Center’s website to learn more about how you can participate in these online events.
